A Look At Myers Briggs
The MB (Myers Briggs) suggests that the core of how we operate as people is how we use our tools to accomplish goals and the words we use to communicate.
In tool usage we can be either Cooperative or Utilitarian – Cooperative people tend to value relationships more than accomplishing the objective. Utilitarian people tend to value accomplishing the goal more than relationships.
In word usage the two sides are Abstract or Concrete. Abstract people tend to use words that are more abstract in nature. They tend to communicate in theories and ideas. Concrete people tend to use words that are more specific and factual.
4 Categories Of Myers Briggs
- NT – Abstract, Utilitarian
- NF – Abstract, Cooperative
- SP – Concrete, Cooperative
- SJ – Concrete, Utilitarian
What Is The DISC Model?
The DISC Model is broken down into two main Groups thus again giving us four main categories. The first group is Active or Passive.
Active People tend to be outgoing and more energetic in social situations. Extroverted would be another way to describe this.
Passive individuals tend to be more conservative, laid back, more introverted.
The DISC Model also uses the same tool usages model as the MB (Myers Briggs) although DiSC uses the words of Task oriented or People oriented.
This also give us 4 categories
D – Active, Task
- I – Active, People
- S – Passive, People
- C – Passive, Task
In summary MB (Myers Briggs) uses how we use Words and How we use our Tools to construct the basic framework for personality typing
The DISC Model uses How we relate to others around us Active/Passive or Introverted/Extroverted and how we use our Tools for their framework.
The advantage of using the DiSC model is that is much more simple to detect and understand a persons personality type but the MB gives us a much more in-depth look at personalities and breaks it down into a total of 16 categories as apposed to the 4 from DiSC.
Final thoughts on personalities – We are all born with certain tendencies toward specific groupings. There are advantages and disadvantages to each side of the personality spectrum in different circumstances.
We have much more happiness in life if we develop the opposing side of our personality type and learn when it is appropriate to uses what combination of behavioral patterns.
Developing balance in our own personality will allow us to move toward self actualization and a more fulfilling life.
